MILWAUKEE ? Much has been done in the best interests of the game during Bud Selig?s long and successful tenure as commissioner of Major League Baseball.
Because from Kenesaw Mountain Landis to Selig, that has been the acid test for all the keepers of the game, hasn?t it?
The best interests of baseball.
Nothing else matters.
Commissioners come and go. Stars come and go. Scandals come and go. Records come and go.
Sometimes, the occasional asterisk is affixed.
But the game goes on ? always has, always will despite the infrequent tweak ? in largely its original form. That is the timeless beauty and wonder of the sport that our Bud has been privileged to shepherd to a next generation that also will be entrusted to act in the best interests of baseball, no matter what.
So it is with some coincidence that Milwaukee is ground zero for baseball?s latest crisis. It is here where Ryan Braun plays; it is here where Selig oversees the game from the top floor of the tallest building in town.
Braun has become the first MLB player to be exonerated after testing positive for a banned substance. Braun, the Brewers and their adherents are thrilled. Meanwhile, the keepers of the game are angry enough to maybe consider filing an appeal or, at the very least, remain locked in adversarial position with their National League MVP.
Selig?s decision on how to proceed after getting the high, hard one from an arbitration panel would be based on many factors, but in the end, only one matters.
The best interests of the game demand that baseball let the Braun affair go like the bat slipping through Josh Hamilton?s hands. The best interests of the game mandate baseball to move on and distance itself from fallout that is relatively certain to occur between Braun and anyone he believes may have contaminated his urine sample.
Appropriately, baseball defended its drug-testing system as vehemently as Braun did his innocence. It had, and may have, a lot to lose with a program that was batting 1.000 before Braun.
But for the first time, something went wrong. Most egregiously, confidentiality was breached. The sample was improperly handled, according to the panel.
In the end, though, the system worked as designed. Braun went through the appeal process and won. Whether he is as completely innocent as he claims, no one will ever know except the player himself.
Innocent people are convicted and the guilty skate all the time in the judicial system, the reason for the appeal process. But this is just a game, and the best interests of the game are telling its temporary keepers to pack up the bat bag and live to fight another day.

Even a change in government can make a significant difference to an industry. Franchisees cannot control the types of changes which can occur without warning. Unprepared franchisees might lose their market share but savvy franchisees will be able to pick it up and turn a profit.
Franchisees must be prepared to meet any challenge. If an entrepreneur is trying to decide between two franchises, choose the one which requires the least investment. Selecting the franchise requiring the least capital allows the franchisee to have deeper pockets and additional working capital.
The successful franchisee must have a combination of characteristics including passion, vision, motivation and creative problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to make decisions and learn from failures. Franchisees must be independent thinkers and, ultimately, they must be leaders.
In addition, franchisees should also be prepared to delegate duties. Not everyone is an expert in every area. If a franchisee has an expert on their team, delegate the duties to the best person for the job. Basically, successful franchising comes down to ?you.? Within franchising, you are the one who will generate success. You and your passion will build a successful team and a successful franchise.

'I am not a liar': Pacific mayor defends, proves service record
Cy Sun came not as Pacific's recently-elected mayor but as a citizen determined to defend his military record.
Standing beside a display of medals he had earned in battle, the 81-year-old Korean War veteran sent a clear, emotionally charged message to those who had questioned his decorated duty to country.
"I am not a liar," Sun assured some 75 residents in the course of a prepared, passionate 54-minute speech at the Pacific Community Center Gym last Friday night. "I've been to hell and back."
The former U.S. Army master sergeant then went on to unpack for his audience the horrors of three years of fierce combat with the 23rd Infantry Regiment, reliving narrow escapes from near-death experiences suffered under the most brutal conditions imaginable.
Such was Sun's response to several citizens, including City Councilman Gary Hulsey, who'd questioned the validity of the military background he'd claimed. Sun, a write-in candidate who upset two-term incumbent Richard Hildreth in the November general election, had circulated a memo during the campaign referring to some of the wartime medals he'd received for gallantry in action, including the rare Croix de Guerre.
Military records and documents obtained by the Auburn Reporter confirmed that Sun had indeed earned the Croix de Guerre, the Silver Star, the Purple Heart with one oak leaf cluster, the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, the Combat Infantry Badge (CIB), two Distinguished United Citations and one Overseas Bar, among other citations.
Sun said he had never intended for this controversy to spill out into the open and become a public spectacle. But as a former soldier, Sun said, he felt compelled to fight for his honor and for those who died alongside him in battle.
"The medals and citations were in a cardboard box, until only now," Sun said. "I have never laid my laurels on being a hero. I am not a hero. Those guys who gave their lives are the real heroes.
"After (proving) I am not a liar, the medals and citations will go straight back in cardboard boxes," he said. "But now, there's an ugly stain on them, the stain ... that I had to bring them out to prove that we, my blood brothers and I, are not liars."
Sun never intended to use them to prove he was telling the truth.
Sun's wife, Barbara, says the ordeal has reopened painful wounds. Severely wounded on three occasions, Sun still refused to come home. He was determined to stay with his fighting unit.
"For the years we have been married, he never talked about the depth of his military history in Korea. What has surfaced not only surprised but also shocked me," she told the audience after her husband's speech. "Now I know his true feelings of why he kept the depth of his career in combat behind a closed door in his heart. The trauma is too great to even understand why. For these past several weeks, the pain for him has been intense.
"Now his military service is an open page, a page that was his, and only his, to keep ... that has been forced open to the public," she?added. "How mean and inconsiderate can people be?"
Sun left the podium and gymnasium to a standing ovation, fighting back tears. Vietnam War veteran Frank Hatten was among those moved by Sun's detailed story.
"He took it personally. You could see that, and that hurts me as a veteran," Hatten said. "It's shameful that somebody could question it and continue to question it."

Hulsey, who was in attendance, later met privately with Sun to acknowledge the man's "exemplary military service record" and "resolve" any matters.
"We are moving on," Hulsey said.
Corky Berthiaume, Veterans of Foreign Wars state adjutant, has apologized to Sun on behalf of those who doubted his service.
Hildreth, who refused to challenge Sun's record during the mayoral campaign, said Sun effectively has defended his honor as a decorated war veteran. "I think the City can move ahead now," he said.
According to documents, Sun, then 21, received the Croix de Guerre for his actions in a launched attack on Hill 851 of Heartbreak Ridge on Sept. 19, 1951. Historians and analysts consider it the war's bloodiest battle.
Gen. Ralph Monclar, who commanded the French Battalion as part of the UN fighting force in the Korean War, awarded the Croix de Guerre to Sun, describing him "as an excellent non-commissioned officer ... who distinguished himself" in a counterattack.
"Sgt. Sun constantly appeared at the most exposed positions, encouraged the survivors, directed their fire, and showed them a good
example," Gen. Monclar wrote. "The personal actions ... and his braveness demonstrated under these critical conditions under mortar enemy fire, greatly contributed to the success of this action and deserve to be cited as an example for all."
Sun says he has never worn his medals or ribbons in public, only his CIB.
"The medals don't belong to me," Sun insisted. "They belong to those guys who fought in combat beside me. Those guys who took the bullets and made the supreme sacrifice. Without them, the medals would not have gotten in my hands. The medals are the symbols of our comradeship in battle. The medals belong to all of us."

Afghan leaders asks Pakistani help in peace bid (AP)
ISLAMABAD ? The Afghan president appealed for Pakistan's help Thursday in negotiating a peace deal with Taliban militants ahead of a summit that will be also include the leader of Iran.
The meetings in Islamabad come at a time when momentum for peace talks with the Taliban seems to be growing, even as all parties to a stuttering process marked by intense mistrust say that success in ending the 10-year war in Afghanistan is far from certain.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai told The Wall Street Journal in an interview published Thursday that talks among the U.S, the Afghan government and the Taliban had taken place in the past month. If true, it would mark a significant development because till now the Taliban had said they would only negotiate with the Americans, maintaining Karzai was a puppet leader and that the movement was the legitimate ruler in Afghanistan.
Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid denied Karzai's comments that negotiations have already taken place, saying in a statement "the Taliban did not talk with the Kabul government anywhere."
Pakistan is regarded as a key player in any peace process because its historical ties with the Taliban and other insurgents mean Islamabad could help bring them to the table or be a spoiler. The Taliban leadership is widely believed to be based in Pakistan, and under some influence of the country's security establishment.
Iran, which also neighbors Afghanistan and Pakistan, is also important to the future stability of Afghanistan. In the past, it supported campaigns against the Taliban, a radical Sunni Muslim group opposed to the Shiites who make up a majority of Iran's population. But some reports have suggested Tehran ? Washington's archenemy ? also has supported the Taliban against U.S. troops.
The U.S. launched the war in Afghanistan after the 9/11 attacks, but has been unable to defeat the Taliban, which once sheltered Osama bin Laden. Washington wants to withdraw most of its troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014, and try to ensure the country remains moderately stable.
Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have been badly strained, but the meeting between Karzai and President Asif Ali Zardari suggested that ties are improving. An Afghan statement said the leaders had agreed to restart a joint peace commission that was shelved after the assassination last year of Afghanistan's envoy to Taliban peace talks in Kabul.
Afghan officials had accused Pakistan of playing a role in the killing ? allegations it denied.
In a statement, Zardari said Karzai told the meeting Thursday that Pakistan's support "was critical to the success of Afghan owned and Afghan led peace process" and that both countries should cooperate for peace.
Earlier, Ismail Qasemyar, the international relations adviser to the Afghan-government appointed council for talks with the Taliban, said Karzai would ask Zardari to "put positive and constructive pressure over the leadership of the Taliban to come close and to come together to start intra-Afghan dialogue and a process of negotiation."
During his three-day trip, President Karzai is also scheduled to meet Pakistani clerics and politicians who are close to the Afghan Taliban in a bid to get their support for peace, including Maulana Samiul Haq, known as the spiritual father of the Taliban because he runs an Islamic seminary in northwestern Pakistan that has taught many of the group's leaders.
"This is a time when the Taliban are defeating Western forces in Afghanistan," Haq told The Associated Press. "A forceful stance by Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran will bring peace and stability in this region by pushing out the foreign forces."
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived in Islamabad in the late afternoon and met separately with Zardari. The two men discussed a proposed pipeline that would deliver natural gas from Iran to Pakistan, according to a statement from Zardari.
The U.S. opposes the initiative. It wants to isolate Tehran because of its nuclear program, and is threatening sanctions against Islamabad if the project goes ahead. Pakistan says it needs the gas to meet chronic industrial and domestic energy shortages.
On Friday, all three leaders will meet for talks likely to focus on the Afghan war.
Ahmadinjad's trip coincides with rising Western concerns after Iranian state TV broadcast pictures of the president overseeing what was described as the first Iranian-made fuel rod being inserted into a research reactor in northern Tehran. Tensions between Israel and Iran are also rising following an attack in India on an Israeli diplomat that Israel has blamed on Iran.

A simple ?thank you for coming? goes a long way, and for those negative comments, showing in public that you are caring and capable enough to address customer complaints adds to your image of a great host.
5. ?But you don?t have to take my word for it ?? The days of having customer quotes on your website are over. Today, customer quotes are more real, more recent and more trusted in places you can?t touch (never, ever, fake a review). But your customers can! Encourage customers to leave their positive opinions online, and don?t be afraid to suggest a site such as Yelp, Urbanspoon or Foursquare.
There is no such thing as getting rid of online reviews, or removing the risk of a negative comment. And you don?t want to, either. There is something dubious about a place that only ever receives five-star glowing reviews or that doesn?t have any reviews at all from the past six months.

Bahrain Shiites mark revolt anniversary (AP)
MANAMA, Bahrain ? Bahraini security forces fanned out across the island nation in unprecedented numbers on Tuesday as Shiites marked the one-year anniversary of their uprising against the country's Sunni rulers.
Authorities sent troop reinforcements and armored vehicles to the predominantly Shiite villages around the capital Manama to prevent people from gathering and answering the call of the main opposition movement, Al Wefaq.
The government meanwhile threatened to take legal action against the organizers of protests on Monday that turned violent. This could herald a new crackdown on Al Wefaq, which until last year was tolerated but which has suffered sporadic prosecutions and detentions after it took the lead in last year's protests.
At least 40 people have been killed during a year of unprecedented political unrest in Bahrain, the Gulf country hardest hit by upheaval during 2011's Arab Spring protests.
The kingdom's ruling dynasty has promised reforms to end the upheaval, although it refuses to make the far-reaching changes the protesters and Al Wefaq, have demanded. These include ending the monarchy's ability to select the government, set key state policies and appoint most of the parliament members.
Police on Tuesday fired tear gas at protesters in an apparent attempt to pre-empt a repeat of the marches the night before, in which protesters made their largest attempt in months to retake the city's central roundabout. Pearl Square had served as the epicenter of weeks of anti-government protests last year, and its reoccupation would be a major boost for the movement.
The government statement said many protesters on Monday left a pre-authorized route in Manama, turning it into a riot after police arrived. It said Al Wefaq was responsible for the violence, because it failed to "control the crowd (and) that jeopardized the safety of the people along a busy main road."
Legal procedures will be taken against the organizers of the march, Tuesday's statement said.
Al Wefaq rejected the claim, and said Tuesday that the "unfounded accusations" are part of the rulers' efforts to discredit the group.
"They have used excessive force against the people throughout all this time, but people keep coming back to the streets to insist on their demand to have a role in the decisions about their country," said Abdul Jalil Khalil, a former Al Wefaq parliamentarian.
Shiites account for about 70 percent of Bahrain's population of some 525,000 people, but say they have faced decades of discrimination and are blocked from top political and security posts.
"After years of broken promises for change, Bahrain exploded last year," Khalil said. "We are still here and we want serious solution and meaningful reform."
Sunni rulers made token concessions in June ahead of U.S.-supported reconciliation talks between the monarchy and the opposition. A so-called national dialogue began in July, but Al Wefaq delegates pulled out of the talks, saying the government was not willing to discuss political reform.
Since then, no talks between the monarchy and the opposition have taken place, Khalil said. Street battles between security forces and protesters still flare up almost every day in the predominantly Shiite villages around the capital.

I have to teach a lesson on fall clothing to preschool age children. I?ve found some fun activities but wanted to get more ideas. I?m looking for another activity to do during circle time and then something for math and science. Any creative ideas?

Oscar statues fly from Chicago to Los Angeles (AP)
LOS ANGELES ? It's safe to say Oscar is the most popular passenger on Flight 531.
Two Oscar statuettes traveled alongside film academy president Tom Sherak aboard the United Airlines flight from Chicago to Los Angeles, which was renamed Oscar 1 for the occasion.
The golden guys were embraced hundreds of times as passengers snapped photos of themselves with the coveted trophy.
Airline workers also held an Oscar-related trivia contest for passengers on board and awarded prizes from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
A flight attendant called the occasion a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" as she invited passengers to enjoy "the flight of the Oscars."
The statuettes are made in Chicago and typically shipped to Los Angeles with little fanfare. So why have Oscar mix it up with passengers?

Oscar had his own boarding pass ? and a major entourage ? as he boarded a commercial flight named in his honor from Chicago to Los Angeles on Thursday.
Tom Sherak, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, carried Oscar through O'Hare International Airport, much to the astonishment of ticketed passengers who lined up for a chance to be photographed with the golden statuette.
The pilot of the United Airlines flight, "Oscar 1," allowed Oscar into the cockpit of the 757 before takeoff, calling the statuette his most prestigious "non-human" passenger yet.
"It's a special treat. We want everyone to enjoy the flight and enjoy the show," Capt. Mel Mason Jnr. said.
Sherak and other academy officials are personally escorting 42 of the coveted trophies back to academy headquarters in Beverly Hills, Calif., from the R.S. Owens foundry in suburban Chicago. Sherak said passengers would have a chance to meet Oscar during the 4 1/2-hour flight ? but warned of the potential for disruption.
"We'll see how the speeches go," Sherak said. "It could be a seven hour flight."
The gushing words of thanks began before the golden guy even left the ground, with a trio of flight attendants making acceptance speeches at the airport. One thanked her mom, one thanked Jesus and the other thanked the Transportation Security Administration.
The Oscars will be presented Feb. 26.

I took a step back and observed all this. Having just come out of a relationship I thought, ?Please God, never let that be me. I don?t want to be with one of those men who?d just grab anything.? I know that sounds a little harsh, but when you?re in a relationship, it?s usually a decision between the couple whether they?re going to celebrate Valentine?s Day. If it is a mutual decision, I sure would hope that both parties put forth real effort. And if he or she doesn?t, it?s not a promising sign. Some planning and thought would be nice, and we all deserve that.
After witnessing a Kroger full of men shopping last-minute, I was thankful? thankful for the fact that I had so much love in my life from my girlfriends, my family, and myself. I finally felt OK to celebrate Valentine?s Day in my own way. I made a promise to myself to always honor love on Valentine?s Day (and beyond) and spend the day however I want. As long as I stay present and allow myself to feel the love of my friends and the love I have for myself, I will have a successful Valentine?s Day.
I?ve redefined what a ?good? Valentine?s Day is. For me, it?s a nice dinner out with my friends, drinking some wine and cheating on our diets. It doesn?t even need to be a dinner out! Having my friends come over to my house and contributing their favorite dishes is a great way to honor one another. People put their heart in cooking; what better way to celebrate a day of love than over a home-cooked meal and endless hours of conversation? A ?good? Valentine?s Day can also be a movie night or a night to myself.
I realize that Valentine?s Day can be challenging for single women. But we all have the choice to honor all the love in our lives that day. Refuse to take yourself for granted. Celebrate your girlfriends?celebrate yourself. Stand firm in who you are and be thankful for all the wonderful things you are. Make your V-Day a celebration of that, not just a commercial afterthought.

The pur?ed lamb with rice and spices is only served in a few areas of the city and usually only until 7 a.m. Thankfully, Kaka?s Caf? and House of Breakfast is still open.

Manzoor Ahmed, the owner, says his family has been running the tiny restaurant for more than 600 years. Now considered a master, Mr. Ahmed has spent three decades catering to his early-morning customers. Sitting on a stone platform, he reaches chest deep into a huge clay pot in the floor where the lamb has been cooking for hours. His grease-stained hand scoops out a steaming helping of harissa with a silver ladle.
It doesn?t look appetizing, but the aroma is enticing and the taste amazing. Locals say it?s perfect for frigid winter mornings. I find it to be true, too.

Bruce Springsteen joins Grammy Awards performers (Reuters)
LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will perform at the 2012 Grammy Awards, joining Adele, Paul McCartney, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj on the music show lineup.
Springsteen announced last week the release of his new album, "Wrecking Ball," on March 6 and his first U.S. tour with the E Street Band since the death last June of saxophonist Clarence Clemons. "We Take Care of Our Own" is the first single from the album.
News of The Boss' performance comes on the heels of the announcement that British singer Adele would return to the stage for the first time since her vocal chord surgery in November.
The singer tweeted: "Ima be, Ima be singing at the Grammys. It's been so long I started to forget I was a singer! I can't wait, speak soon xx." She is nominated in six categories this year, including record of the year and song of the year.
Also scheduled to perform are Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson, Glen Campbell, Coldplay, Rihanna, Bruno Mars and Blake Shelton.
The Grammys will be broadcast on CBS on February 12.

Kyrillos makes NJ US Senate candidacy official (AP)
LINCROFT, N.J. ? Sen. Joe Kyrillos, the veteran New Jersey Republican lawmaker whose friendship with Gov. Chris Christie goes back 20 years, officially launched his campaign for the GOP's U.S. Senate nomination on Wednesday.
Kyrillos (KIR'-ill-ohs) held kickoff events Wednesday in Monmouth County ? which he represents ? and in Burlington County. On his home turf in Lincroft, Kyrillos wasted no time blaming his potential opponent, incumbent Democrat Sen. Bob Menendez, and President Obama for dysfunction in Washington.
"America faces tough and uncertain times. Our families face challenging times. Our spirit ? America's spirit ? is being tested," Kyrillos said. "But Washington is failing us. It doesn't measure up to the great people of this country."
Kyrillos criticized Menendez directly for inflated spending and ballooning federal debt, and said the Hoboken lawmaker ran for his first full term six years ago on a platform of job creation.
"Our unemployment rate then was 4.7 percent. Today, the unemployment rate is 8.5 percent. His answer to this problem: More of the same ? more spending, more debt, more job-killing regulation," Kyrillos said in a fiery 20-minute speech. "New Jersey taxpayers ? our children, our grandchildren, our families ? cannot afford six more years of Bob Menendez and `more of the same.'"
The 51-year-old legislator said he would seek a balanced budget amendment and vote to repeal "Obama-care" if elected to the Senate. His announcement before a packed house of 250 GOP who's who included Christie's dad, Bill, seated in the front row next to Kyrillos' parents. Kyrillos chaired Christie's successful gubernatorial campaign, which was considered an upset in Democratic-leaning New Jersey in 2009. A year earlier, he was state chairman of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's presidential campaign.
Kyrillos would face an uphill battle against Menendez, the better-known and well-financed incumbent, in a year with Obama at the top of the ticket.
Menendez has nearly $7 million cash on hand as of Sept. 30, the end of the most recent federal reporting period. Kyrillos was undeclared at the time.
Recent polling data shows a 12 percentage point gap between Menendez and his closest challenger
Kyrillos first must survive a GOP primary, as conservative Ian Linker also plans to seek the Republican nomination.
The Menendez campaign said the senator is proud to run on his record of job protection and creation, restoring financial security for the middle-class and taking on credit card companies that rip off consumers.
"If 20-year Trenton insider and former State Republican Party Chair Joe Kyrillos should win the Republican primary, the contrast is stark," Menendez campaign consultant Brad Lawrence said. "Sen. Kyrillos voted against making taxes fairer for the middle class and supported unfair tax cuts for millionaires. Sen. Kyrillos has cozied up to the extremists who oppose investing in stem-cell research, would deny a woman's right to choose and resist common sense gun-safety laws."

T-Mobile is throwing some of its weight behind the mobile payment movement this morning, becoming the first carrier to offer Square credit card readers to a handful of retail outlets. Under the company's new campaign, stores equipped with T-Mobile smartphones will be able to use Jack Dorsey's readers to finalize transactions from the comfort of their palms. This should come in handy for cash-only businesses, in particular, as T-Mobile emphasized in its announcement today.
