Panasonic PT-AE8000U projector touts brighter, smoother 3D for king-of-the-hill home theaters

Panasonic PTAE8000U projector touts brighter, smoother 3D for kingofthehill home theaters

Panasonic wasn't one of the quickest out of the gate with a 3D projector, having only unveiled the PT-AE7000 in the middle of last year, but it's making up for lost time with a follow-up. The PT-AE8000 puts most of the focus on that extra dimension through both a 20 percent brighter 3D picture and motion interpolation for the stereoscopic image. Fine-tuning is equally new through picture balance and monitor tools that help perfect the color and parallax effects before any 3D movie gets started. Traditionalists in love with 2D get their fill, too: a new 220W lamp produces deeper reds, a more visible 2,400 lumens of brightness and (with the help of plates and filters) an even higher 500,000:1 contrast ratio. We've confirmed with Panasonic that the AE8000U should cost the same $3,499 as the AE7000 when it reaches stores between late September and early October, which makes the new projector a tempting prospect if you've been holding off until now.

Samsung's advance TVs go missing en route to Berlin

2 hrs.

SEOUL/BERLIN -- Two of Samsung Electronics' advanced OLED television sets have gone missing while on their way to the IFA consumer electronics fair in Berlin, the company said on Tuesday.

The organic-light-emitting diodes (OLED) TVs disappeared between August 21 and 28, a company spokesman said, adding there was no threat to its presence at the show as there were more such sets at Samsung's booth in Berlin.

An official complaint has been lodged with local police, a spokesman confirmed, but he added they didn't know where the TVs went missing or even if it was in Germany.

Samsung declined to comment on whether it believed the disappearance could be a case of industrial espionage, or on potential financial damages it could suffer from the loss of the technology.

Media reports had said it may have been a theft aimed at stealing the advanced TV technology, whose loss could cost the firm billions of dollars.

OLED systems are widely touted successors to liquid crystal displays (LCDs). They are used in smartphones such as Samsung's Galaxy Note because the displays are lighter, thinner and tougher than alternatives.

However, in larger applications such as TVs, they are currently too expensive for mass-market sale. At a rumored price tag of $10,000, the 55-inch models from Samsung and LG would be 10 times the price of an equivalent LCD TV.

(AP) ? The only worry on Michael Strahan's mind when he made his entrance Tuesday as the new co-host of "Live!": "Don't trip," he summed up after the show.

He didn't.

When Kelly Ripa introduced him, the gap-toothed former football player jogged onto the morning show set and gathered her up in a bear hug, lifting her off her feet.

"When I was hugging Kelly, that's when I was calming down," Strahan explained.

The rest of the hour was clearly a snap for him and for Ripa, who was getting a permanent partner nine months after Regis Philbin retired from the show and after having welcomed Strahan and 58 other guests in the chair beside her.

Taking his seat on Tuesday, the former New York Giant joked that it felt "comfy, like it was molded for my body."

Strahan was relaxed, amiable and playful, and drew "ahhhs" from women in the studio audience when he presented Ripa with a dozen red roses.

"It's so nice to have a co-host literally sweep you off your feet," Ripa told viewers, "and I know that he can bench press me if he wanted to."

Maybe his arrival was fulfilling a prophecy. Ripa played a clip of Strahan's first appearance on the show in 2008, shortly after the Giants had won the Super Bowl. Philbin asked Strahan what he would want to do after retiring from football, and Strahan said that Philbin's job looked pretty good.

"I was joking," Strahan said on Tuesday, "and I'm glad the joke came true."

Strahan's hiring has been an open secret for the past two weeks. His selection was made official a couple of minutes into what, since November, had gone by the stripped-down title "Live! With Kelly" and now rechristened "Live! With Kelly and Michael."

Or rather, "live! with kelly and michael." Eyeing the brand-new all-lowercase logo during a commercial break, the co-hosts pondered whether the first letters of their names would look better capitalized.

During their breezy first "host chat," Strahan amusedly shared from a list of obnoxious pet names for women ("babe" and "sweet cheeks" among them). The pair discussed parenting policies, in particular how much money the Tooth Fairy should award for a lost tooth.

"Homeland" star Claire Danes was the first guest, followed by singer Phillip Phillips.

Then Olympic gold-medal gymnasts Aly Raisman and Jordyn Wieber each teamed with one of the co-hosts in a challenge on balance beams. Strahan was totally game for the stunt, which called for carrying eggs balanced on a spoon. (The two teams tied with 13 eggs apiece.)

After the broadcast, Strahan downplayed any suggestion the show would be changing much.

"I think you have two people who can laugh at themselves, who can laugh at each other, who have a good time, who get along ? and make sure that anyone who watches the show enjoys it," Strahan said. "I think it's the same formula."

The formula was cooked up by Philbin, the original host, nearly 30 years ago. Ripa joined him in 2001.

Executive producer Michael Gelman, who oversaw that transition from Kathie Lee Gifford to Ripa, was asked how Strahan emerged as the favorite in the current competition.

"Chemistry isn't something you can really put your finger on," he said. "But there was something special individually with Michael, and the chemistry was there."

Ripa, declaring that she had had "a little bit of a say" in Strahan's selection, said, "I wear my heart on my sleeve, so it's pretty obvious that I love him. So I was definitely on board."

"It seems like we've been doing it all along," she added.

In return, Strahan said Ripa has "done a great job for 11 or 12 years, and hopefully we'll do it for the next 11 or 12 years."

In the meantime, he will continue as a host of "Fox NFL Sunday," which originates from Los Angeles, where he lives. He will commute to New York to do "Live!"

How will he handle that routine?

"Get on a plane," he cracked. "Coming here during the week and doing this show, it's fun. I don't look at it as if it's a chore."

Before bringing Strahan out, Ripa joked about the lengthy search, advising people to stop sending her resumes.

"I have enjoyed every single solitary person ? except for one," she said. "The staff is laughing because they know that's true."

Asked afterward who that one spoilsport had been, she stated with a laugh, "I would never reveal the co-host I did not enjoy being with."

"But I will!" Strahan jumped in.

"He figured it out," said Ripa, offering yet more evidence of their rapport. "He watches the show and he knows my body language."

SA to host international small business gathering

South Africa would for the first time ever host the yearly International Small Business Congress, bringing together entrepreneurs and small business role players from around the world, Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies said on Monday.

The congress would take place from September 15 to 18 at the Sandton Convention Centre, in Johannesburg, with more than 1 000 delegates expected.

Davies said the gathering would provide for a platform to benchmark and draw lessons from both developed and developing countries to help sharpen policy development and high impact programmes in the South African small to medium-sized enterprise sector.

The congress will be hosted in collaboration with the City of Johannesburg, the Foundation for African Business and Consumer Services, the Small Enterprise Finance Agency, the Small Enterprise Development Agency and the Industrial Development Corporation.

MTN Business, Absa Bank and Shanduka Black Umbrellas is providing sponsorship.

The theme of this year?s congress will be ?Fostering small business in new and high-potential industries worldwide?. ?This theme is of particular importance to South Africa, especially as we widen the market for South African goods and services through stronger focus on exports to the region and other economic groupings such as Brics [Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa].

?The theme is also important as we advocate for a diversified economy and we venture into activities geared towards greening the economy. Based on the latter, there are new opportunities for new enterprises and this congress will provide for a learning platform in these areas,? Davies added.

Using magnetism to understand superconductivity

ScienceDaily (Sep. 4, 2012) ? Might it one day be possible to transmit electricity from an offshore wind turbine to land-based users without any loss of current?

Materials known as "high temperature" superconductors (even though they must be maintained at -140?C!), which can conduct electricity without any losses, were supposed to make this dream a reality. But over the past twenty-five years, scientists have not been able to make any progress in this area. Research being done in EPFL's Laboratory for Quantum Magnetism (LQM) could change that. Their study of magnetism at extremely small scales could give physicists a tool to use in their search for new superconducting materials.

Studying a superthin layer

There are some ceramics that are excellent insulators at room temperature but that become perfect conductors when submersed in liquid nitrogen. However, this phenomenon, known as "high temperature" superconductivity, is not at all well understood by physicists. They theorize that at these temperatures, the collective quantum magnetic properties of the atoms in the material might come into play. But studying the magnetic properties of these materials at this minuscule scale would require years of effort.

Mark Dean, John Hill and Ivan Bozovic from Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), Thorsten Schmitt from Switzerland's Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), and Bastien Dalla Piazza and Henrik Ronnow from EPFL have unveiled the phenomena at work at this atomic scale. Using a unique device, the Brookhaven team created a layer just a single atom thick. Then, despite the material's extreme thinness, the PSI scientists were able to use an ultrasensitive instrument to measure the magnetic dynamics of the atoms. And then EPFL provided the final piece of the puzzle, with mathematical models to analyze the measurements.

A long-awaited research tool

"We now have a kind of flashlight that will show us what direction we should take in our search," explains Ronnow. Without understanding how these superconducting properties occurred at these temperatures, researchers were probing in the dark, using trial and error, to explore promising new materials. By combining these results with other recent work done by LQM researcher Nikolai Tsyrulin, the EPFL team has provided a new method to help physicists in their search for new superconductors. It's a long-awaited step forward in the field; the Nobel Prize recognizing the discovery of high temperature superconductivity was awarded more than 25 years ago.

Promises for the future

Electrical resistance in traditional power lines leads to energy losses on the order of 3% in the electricity grid. At the scale of an entire country, this translates into several thousand gigawatts, which, in Switzerland's case, would be the equivalent of the electricity consumption of a city the size of Geneva. "The energy challenges we face are significant; being able to use superconductivity won't solve all of them, but it would nonetheless enable huge energy savings," Ronnow adds.

Europe Lays Out Proposals For Wireless Spectrum Sharing Amongst Fiercely Competitive Carriers

European CommissionCarriers are fiercely competitive, but swallowing their territorial tendencies, several around Europe have started teaming up to share mobile spectrum and other resources in the ongoing race to serve hungry mobile consumers with data for their apps, video chats and film streams -- expected soon to top 1 trillion megabytes of data per month. Today the EU took a step towards formalizing that, with the introduction of a proposal for spectrum sharing. Announced?by Neelie Kroes, VP for the European Commission, the proposal "is an essential part of the solution to dealing with the wireless crunch... by using new technical possibilities to create a secondary market for spectrum rights."
